Swimming with the Pigs in Eleuthera
Deputy Amy takes us on a down right filthy fun-filled trip to Eleuthera to swim with the pics.
Let’s break it down…
First off… here is a little about Eleuthera: Located in the Bahamas archipelago, Eleuthera is a long, thin island known for its pink sandy beaches. It is a surfer’s paradise offering up big waves, especially at the, appropriately named, Surfer’s Beach. Ten Bay Beach is more shallow and great for exploring the caves. Ocean Hole is surrounded by trees with a natural inland swimming spot. Ocean Hole is excellent for seeing colorful and vibrant tropical fish and turtles. Edwin's Turtle Lake Marine Reserve shelters green sea turtles and is a fun add on excursion.
There are several excursions you will want to make in advance. Namely, with Bahamas Ocean Safaris. Charter a boat with James Dunnam, you will not be disappointed! He is one of the best at seeing wildlife including the swimming pigs. He plans the day around what you want to do: lobster diving, fishing, turtles, star fish, sand dollar beach, etc.
We stay at the The Cove and love it. It is a secluded resort with white sand beaches and turquoise waters in north Eleuthera. Stunning views and stylish rooms offering suites and villas. The Point Bar on the bluff is a great place to watch sunset even if you’re not staying at Atlantis. And I highly recommend the restaurant at The Cove too. The ultimate Caribbean hideaway.
A few other eateries to note:
Rainbow Inn Seafood and Steakhouse has great food and live music. Go for the catch of the day, pizza or the jerk chicken.
Surf Shack is a tiny restaurant in Gregory Town with a friendly laid-back chill vibe.
Sapphire Blue Hole is located in North Eleuthera off the same road that goes to Preacher’s Cave. Take a leap into the cool fresh sapphire blue water… don’t miss it. And have a camera ready!
Eleuthera has been named one of the best Caribbean resorts to add to your bucket list. See the links below for more about what to do and where to go.
You will fall in love with the pigs! No doubt.
