The Colosseum

East of the Roman Forum is the famous Colosseum. A massive stone amphitheater commissioned around 70-72 A.D. by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty as a gift to the Roman people.

Gift indeed. This magnificent arena gave the Roman people ‘100 days of games’ including gladiatorial combats and wild animal fights.

Though two-thirds of the original Colosseum has been destroyed over time, it remains an iconic symbol of Rome and its long, tumultuous history.
